The Immune System of Shrimp

چکیده
Introduction Penaeid shrimp aquaculture is an important economic activity worldwide. Nevertheless, shrimp production has been seriously affected by diseases, mostly those caused by viruses (Flegel, 2006) and Vibrio bacteria (Bachère, 2000). Shrimp resistance to invading organisms is strongly influenced by its immune status. The defense mechanisms of crustaceans is less developed than that in finfish and other vertebrates (Figure 1). More specifically, crustaceans have no adaptive memory. In other words, they do not have the ability of producing immunoglobulins, so that they apparently depend only on innate defense systems (Roch, 1999). Understanding shrimp defense mechanisms in combination with different strategies can contribute to improve disease management. In fact, several different methods exist to learn about the health/disease status of these animals, including the evaluation of immune/physiological parameters such as hemolymph protein concentration, total hemocyte counts, phenoloxidase activity, free radical production, phagocytic activity, and field variables including stress tests, survival, and growth rates, which can be used as shrimp health status indicators (Rodríguez y Le Moullac, 2000). The purpose of this bulletin is to review some major defense mechanisms of shrimp.

Application of Bacillus amyloliquefaciens as probiotic for Litopenaeus vannamei (Boone, 1931) cultivated in a biofloc system
Probiotics can improve growth, survival and resistance to pathogenic organisms of the cultivated species in aquaculture systems with water recirculation. However, their possible benefits on biofloc systems have been less studied. In this study, the benefits of Bacillus amyloliquefaciens bacterium, on a biofloc culture of Litopenaeus vannamei were evaluated. B. amyloliquefaciens was applied as d...

Three different experiments were conducted to study the effect of dietary astaxanthin on the immune response, resistance to white spot syndrome virus (WSSV) and transcription of antioxidant enzyme genes in Pacific white shrimp Litopenaeus vannamei. Each experiment included one triplicate treatment group (fed with 80 mg/kg astaxanthin supplemented diet) and one triplicate control group (fed with...

The present resaerch was designed to evaluate the effects of Inactivated Spot White Virus with radiation (gamma irradiant WSSV) on survival rate and immunity factors(THC, TPP, PO, SOD, POD) of white leg shrimp. The experiment was done in Bandar Imam Khomeini hatcheries from November 2013 until February 2014. In this study, the survival rate and immunological parameters of shrimp that exposed ...

The development of shrimp aquaculture, in spite of its global necessity, is largely at stake as significant ecological and pathological problems are increasing in the vast majority of the shrimp producing countries. Shrimp immunology is a key element in establishing strategies for controlling diseases in shrimp aquaculture. The total haemocyte count (THC), differential haemocyte count (DHC), t...
